Appalachian Coalfields Delegation to the United Nations
Commission on Sustainable Development
A group of approximately 15 citizen-activists have played a central
role in the CSD-14 & 15 in New York (2006 & 2007). While
there, they voiced their "no such thing as clean coal" message in
various NGO caucuses. They were a key voice on a panel organized by
CitNet and the Appalachian Coalition entitled "The Sustainable Production and
Consumption of Energy: Views from Civil Society." They also
organized an event entitled Music for the Mountains in Harlem at
St. Mary's Church. See more at www.stopmtr.org.
Appalachian Institute for
Renewable Energy
Deindustrialization and job loss play an increasingly corosive role
in family and community life. As such, meaningful livelihoods
becomes a key issue for regional sustainbility. The coalition held
a regional conferences in November 2005, and September 2006
roundtable on the linkages possible between sustainable livelihoods
and renewable energy.
In the Spring of 2007, the Appalachian Institute for Renewable
Energy (AIRE) was formed with generous support from the Mental
Insight Foundation. AIRE is currently our major focus.
